Best Time to Charter a Yacht in the Caribbean: A Month-by-Month Guide

Picture it: warm trade winds, water so clear you can count the starfish from the deck, and a different island every morning. The Caribbean is a year-round destination, but the experience changes with the seasons. The month you choose shapes the weather, the sailing conditions, the atmosphere ashore and which yachts are available. Here is how our brokers think about timing a Caribbean yacht charter.

The short answer

For most guests, the best time to charter a yacht in the Caribbean is mid-December through April, when the weather is dry, the trade winds are steady and the full charter fleet is in the region. May and June are a strong alternative, with calmer seas, warm water and more choice of yachts. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the highest risk from August through October.

Peak season: mid-December to April

This is the Caribbean at its classic best. Days are sunny and dry, humidity is lower and the easterly trade winds blow reliably, which sailing guests love. Air temperatures typically sit in the high 70s to mid 80s °F, and the sea stays comfortably warm.

  • Christmas and New Year are the most sought-after weeks of the year. Rates are at their highest, many yachts require a full week or longer, and the best yachts are often booked a year ahead.
  • January to March brings brisk “Christmas winds” early in the season and some of the most consistent sailing weather of the year.
  • Easter is another busy holiday period, especially for families.

Shoulder season: late April to June

Many experienced charter guests quietly prefer this window. The winds soften, the water is at its warmest and clearest, and anchorages are less crowded. There is wider availability, especially on popular crewed catamarans, and rates are often more favorable than in peak season. June also works well for families once school is out.

Hurricane season: June to November

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, with the greatest activity usually between August and October. Many yachts leave the Caribbean in late spring to spend the summer in the Mediterranean or New England, or go into a shipyard for maintenance. Some yachts continue to charter in the Virgin Islands and the southern Caribbean through the summer, and modern forecasting gives plenty of warning of approaching storms, but you should plan for flexibility and consider travel insurance if you charter in late summer or early autumn.

November and early December: the season begins

From November the fleet returns, freshly maintained and ready for the season. This is when the region hosts its charter yacht shows, where brokers inspect yachts and meet their crews, and it can be a rewarding time to travel, with excellent weather, fewer crowds and the season’s new menus and refits.

Caribbean sailing events worth planning around

  • St. Maarten Heineken Regatta (early March): racing by day and a lively festival atmosphere ashore.
  • BVI Spring Regatta (late March or early April): one of the region’s best-loved regattas.
  • Les Voiles de St. Barth (April): elegant racing among classic and modern yachts.
  • Antigua Sailing Week (late April or early May): a highlight of the Caribbean sailing calendar.
  • New Year’s Eve in St. Barts: the most famous superyacht gathering in the Caribbean, with very high demand.

Dates change each year, so ask your broker to confirm them for your plans. Event weeks book quickly and can carry premium rates.

Matching the season to your destination

Timing and destination go hand in hand. The British Virgin Islands and the US Virgin Islands are popular year-round. St. Martin and St. Barts shine in winter, Antigua and the Leeward Islands peak around Antigua Sailing Week, and the Grenadines reward guests looking for quieter anchorages and stronger sailing. Our guide to choosing the right Caribbean island goes deeper.

When to book

For Christmas, New Year and Easter, booking 9 to 12 months ahead gives you the widest choice of yachts and crews. For other peak-season weeks, six months is a sensible lead time. Shoulder-season charters can often be arranged with less notice, although the most popular yachts still fill up early.
